tREnds 2010 - Introduction and contents

Through adversity comes innovation - that is the theory. But, in 2009 we found little innovation in the property industry... except, that is, within property companies. The industry as a whole has been concentrating on releasing capital and reducing overheads but, in many parts of the property investment business, standing out is still not a great career move.

However, property companies are looking at increasing their competitive advantage and may be starting to give their advisers a run for their money. New revenue models, the use of new forms of media and redoubled attention on their customers is bringing exciting ideas into play.

We are clearly in the middle of an efficiency drive throughout the industry and, as the transaction market comes back, will we lose the focus on running businesses efficiently? Maybe, but there is a lot of new legislation backing this good practice so at least some must stick.

Here is our yearly round-up of what we think will happen during the next 12 months - let us know if you agree. Contact us...

Investors - No more boom and bust - until the next time! Increased regulation, living wills, changing role of property companies and focus on tenants mean great changes in 2010. Read more...

Sustainability - Adrift in a sea of kind words - Why light green leases alone are unlikely to have much impact on the carbon outputs from buildings. Read more...

Property Services - a tough year - but has it really been so bad? Read more...

Corporate Real Estate - Who is now in charge of Accommodation Strategy? Read more...

Public Sector - Government Lite. Better use of public money and better results or panic to just keep the lights on? Read more...

European Property Finance - an interesting tight rope walk for all of us. Read more...

Property Management and Outsourcing - New contract structures and attention to detail. Read more...

Property Systems - Further developments - will users bite? Read more...

IT support - Did they really make savings? Has anyone noticed? Read more...

This is an exciting year - the possibility of a return of the transaction market together with increased innovation built on two years of hardship is an attractive vision. If the industry leaders can press on with the necessary efficiency projects the industry will come out of 2010 in good shape.

We raise a glass to that.
