What would you say about your job if you met your CEO in the lift
- without using the word 'property'?

That was the question Michael Joroff of MIT asked the panel at the recent IPD Occupiers/CBI conference.

In that situation I am sure we could all say something suitable which would raise an interested 'well done'.

However, ten minutes in front of the board once a month is a different matter. How do you attract interest in property or IT? If the service works, that's fine; if there are problems, 10 minutes will feel like a life sentence. More than that, if there are faults with the service, investment in new initiatives will be some way off.

Measurement of property services is ever more important in order to get the message across - but measurement itself remains difficult to pin down.

Our research into Property Outsourcing (Will UK Real Estate Move Offshore?) discovered significant agreement about strategic drivers in Real Estate but more than 100 separate Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure the results. The board will have difficulty remembering five messages - 100 will be irrelevant.

But there are simple rules to follow and we will be developing this theme over the coming months. Read the notes below for more detail and let us know your thoughts about attracting board level attention.

Articles and papers

CIO roundtable - "Do you understand your CIO?" was the theme of a roundtable workshop we helped organize for The Estates Gazette at the end of last year; you may have seen the feature in the EG. Our summary of the session with the EG article is available on our website and documents many of the insights from the panel of IT and business managers.

IT Strategy - We are fortunate in having two articles in the latest Property Systems Review. The first, by Andrew, is a short overview of the importance of business focus in developing an IT strategy. Read

European Systems - The second, by Melita, is a discussion about getting over the barriers to developing a European property systems strategy. Read

Conferences

MIPIM - If you went to MIPIM, we hope you had a chance to meet with our Dutch colleagues Hans Gerritsen and Hans Hiensch who represented Remit there.

PSPE - One of the main Public Sector property conferences, Public Sector Property & Estates is being held at Excel on the 29th March www.pspltd.org/events/ We will be attending and if you would like to meet us there, please contact Mark Jones

Realcomm in Dallas, USA, will be held on 24th, 25th June this year. Andrew will be speaking at the event and we find this conference an excellent event to gauge how technology is developing in comparison with Europe. Realcomm are offering a significant discount on the conference fee for attendees from Europe if you mention our name when you book. Check their website www.realcomm.com and either call us for further details of the discount (contact us) or contact Janice Young, Realcomm's Director Registration & Group Sales, jlyoung@realcomm.com .

If you are thinking of going, please let us know because there is often a European dinner organised for attendees from this side of the Atlantic.

PCS-Expo - It is too early to discuss PCS-Expo in detail but it is worth putting the dates in your diary. The event will be at the Business Design Centre in Islington on 17th, 18th October.

Europe

Our Netherlands colleagues, Hans Gerritsen and Hans Hiensch, have now been joined by Antoine Lelieveld and Anouk Peters, both of whom we worked with at Ernst & Young. The team has also started work on a new pan-European system specification project.

Outsourcing

As discussed above, many of our current projects are focused on property metrics and board reporting. Our research report into Property Outsourcing (Will UK Real Estate Move Offshore?) provides many clues and our colleagues at Alvarez & Marsal have subsequently published their analysis of the research, concentrating on strategic drivers in Corporate Real Estate. Melita is planning a comparison of the two reports for publication and this will draw out the key points about reporting on both sides of the Atlantic.

Time Out - Guide Dogs for the Blind

Regulars will know that Time Out is our section for the book shelf, an amusing film of one of our client days, and other items to tell you more about us rather than the work we do.

Now we have added details of our charity project - our guide dog puppy, Rufus. Read
