Remit Newsletter 9 - Summer 2005
Summer is nearly upon us and with it Wimbledon, the wait for the decision on the 2012 Olympic venue, and an increasingly competitive Formula 1 season. There are lots of distractions from work, but work is increasingly distracting us from play.
It is getting easier to take work away for the summer holidays and it is likely that many of us will take a Blackberry if not our laptop to keep up with email. Even if we leave the email behind, the summer is the time when most books are sold and, if you want to catch up with the latest in management theory, start by having a look at our recommendations on BookShelf. Andrew's own book, IT for Property People is also being launched in the summer - more below.
However, before we can relax for the holidays, the market is busy and we have a lot to tell you about:
Conferences, recent reports and forthcoming presentations
Outsourcing/Offshore survey update
New articles and a case study
Bookshelf
QuickStart - Our new service for your information system project

RealComm - Anaheim, USA. This is the largest conference dealing with property and technology and Andrew has been invited to join a panel to discuss the latest thoughts on property services outsourcing and the effects of technology. If you plan to go, there will be a large UK contingent and it would be good to meet up.

The RICS asked to support this research and so we extended the survey deadline to 31st May. We are currently analysing the results and the first summaries will be released at our presentations at the Henry Stewart Conference and at RealComm. We expect the full report to be ready in August in time for a series of Breakfast Briefings being organised by the RICS.

We are very pleased that our article on outsourcing in Corporate Real Estate, jointly written with Martin Farncombe of Theopraxis, will be published in the June edition of the Journal of Corporate Real Estate.
Three years ago Andrew wrote an article about how managing agents were being asked by their clients to use the client's property systems. We have updated this to include the latest thoughts on moving property processes offshore and this is published in the latest issue of Property Systems Review.

We are also proud that The Crown Estate has allowed us to develop a short case study around the work we did with them to develop a performance measurement framework for their portfolios.

IT for Property People. This last year Andrew has been spending weekends writing a guide to getting the best from information in property. This is not a book about technology - it is about how to choose and use systems so they make a difference to your business. There are case studies about property teams who are using technology successfully and templates for to help choose new systems.
IT for Property People is published by EG Books and will be available in the summer. There will also be a supporting website for the book, www.itforpropertypeople.com and we will send further details when this is formally launched.
One of our favourite recent books is The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell. Read the short review on BookShelf and find out how to start an epidemic of your own - your business services, your hobby - whatever.

Last, but by no means least, we have condensed our approach to system selection so that structuring the project now takes days, not weeks. We use a workshop to bring together all the requirements from the team and we can help prioritise the functionality and develop the business case in two days on site with our client. We have called the approach QuickStart and have produced a leaflet describing the service.
