Remit Newsletter 11 - December 2005

Hold tight for 2006
Sit back for two minutes and think about what will happen next year. Five years after many people gave up the dot.com boom and went back to business as usual, there is real activity in the software world . . . and it isn't just from the traditional IT companies.

A recent internal memo to Microsoft employees warned the company about complacency - they see new developments on the web as being very significant to how people use computers. Look at the number of different devices you already use which rely on the web - iPod, iPaq, Blackberry, mobile phone? TV programmes are now available on your iPod and to see where that may lead, read Andrew's article from the Estates Gazette on Knowledge Management (see below)

More than that, Google, Yahoo and others are developing their own platforms for accessing applications to help you in business. Do you want to implement knowledge management or online collaboration tools? Instead of buying a traditional package, try online start ups such as Jotspot www.jot.com) or Flickr (www.flickr.com) These are new services accessed over the web and made usable by almost ubiquitous broadband access. As mobile internet access becomes yet easier, prepare for greater change.

Whatever your plans may be for next year, be sure that the smartest companies are already looking to use the benefits of this new technology - it won't be the rollercoaster ride of 2000/2001 but there will be significant opportunity for those who adapt … not just in technology but in outsourcing, service provision and even in transactional work.

News
To coincide with Andrew's new book we launched a supporting website called

There are lists of suppliers, news from Property Systems Review, articles and resources for anyone interested in using technology in Real Estate.

Will UK Real Estate move offshore?
Our year long project to research the trends in property outsourcing has been published.
You can either download a copy from the website
or contact us for a printed copy.

When we started it seemed obvious that the differential in costs between the UK and offshore centres would make offshore processing an obvious way forward, but it is not as straightforward as it first appeared.

However, there are movements in the market which have been exaggerated by new entrants to the property services market and this WILL make significant changes. If you are an occupier or property services provider, you will need to be prepared for these changes.

We have described the possible scenarios in our report and there will be a series of events to discuss the findings.

Public Sector
Many of you will know that over the past year we have been working on some significant projects in the public sector with our associates at Performent Consulting. We have decided with Performent to develop a separate newsletter for Local Authorities - this will be tailored more closely to asset issues in that area and if you would like to receive a copy in addition to this newsletter please let us know.
