Jenny wins the LaSalle Investment Management prize

Our colleague Jenniffer Solomon, German Partner of Remit Consulting in Berlin, has won this year's LaSalle Investment Management Prize for the best dissertation in the MSc in Property Investment course of the University of Reading. We are very proud of her achievement - congratulations!

In her thesis she looked at "The future of the CMBS market in Europe - can regulation be the lifesaver?", evaluating the structured feedback of more than 130 market participants across Europe, which allowed her to draw some interesting conclusions. A summary of her survey can be found here...

tREnds 2010

Through adversity comes innovation - that is the theory. But, in 2009 we found little innovation in the property industry... except, that is, within property companies. The industry as a whole has been concentrating on releasing capital and reducing overheads but, in many parts of the property investment business, standing out is still not a great career move.

Here is our team's yearly round-up of what we think will happen during the next 12 months. Read more...

The future of the CMBS market in Europe

Much has been written and speculated about the role of structured finance instruments and especially mortgage backed securities, including CMBS, in the current financial crisis.

But what really went wrong and how should it be addressed to prevent a repetition in future? Jenniffer Solomon recently surveyed 136 respondents drawn from issuers, investors and service providers supporting the CMBS "industry" and her report provides some unique insights into the market view of the crisis.

The results together with her analysis are in a presentation here...

In addition, the German paper Immobilienzeitung published an article about the survey on November 19 2009. The article can be found here but you'll need to pay to download it.

IT benchmark survey summary

This year we undertook our 4th survey of property firms and investors, this year, to see whether IT efficiency and spending has improved in the current economic climate.

There is good news - costs have come down - but also bad news: costs have not come down enough! We also found clues to making IT support more efficient and effective. Read our summary report here.

If you did not have a chance to complete the questionnaire the first time round and would like a full copy of the results together with a comparison of your own figures against your peers, contact us...

IT for Property People - free chapters and discounts

Andrew wrote a book about how IT has very little to do with technology and lots to do with understanding how your property business works. It provides guidance on how to improve the way your business works by choosing and using systems efficiently. There are case studies from some of the market leaders and advice on how to run IT without an IT department.

EGBooks, who publish it has allowed us to give you three chapters to download and read at your convenience.

Not only that, if you want to buy a copy, when you download it you will get a code which gives you a discount code for 10% off.

MIPIM News survey

MIPIM, the conference held in Cannes, France, each year is attended by the great and the good of the real estate world. This year we were besieged by emails asking us to subscribe to online news and gossip from the conference.

With the Estates Gazette, we therefore put a short survey on our website and more than 100 people responded.

Snow Business Survey

Monday 2nd February saw significant snowfall in the South East of England and many people worked from home. We thought it would be interesting to know if working remotely is as effective as being in the office.

We therefore put a short survey on our website and more than 100 people responded. The Estates Gazette ran this article about the survey on the EGi a few days later.

We have now published the findings of the survey.

The key message is that there is nothing to stop remote working  from a technical point of view - we still need to manage people's attitudes to working out of the office.

Why @issue?

Have a look at our bookshelf and you'll find 'Permission Marketing' by Seth Godin, the seminal book on marketing following the internet revolution.

In his follow up book, 'Unleashing the ideas virus', Godin told us that an idea should spread like a virus and people can be encouraged to 'sneeze' these ideas to others.

@issue is our news page. It contains our news and ideas.

We'd like you to catch these ideas and sneeze them to your friends.

"Bless you".
