We are in the midst of a transition in how computing services are delivered. We are moving from a custom made, expensive approach to a commoditised, inexpensive, agile approach. According to analyst Gartner Group, the market for Cloud products and services is expected to more than triple from £30 billion in 2009 to £100 billion in 2013. This in a context of a technology services market that is expected to shrink by nearly 4% this year.

It is easy to take the first steps towards using Cloud computing – however, it should be done in a managed way, taking account of sensitivities and phasing the approach from low impact areas out to client facing tools.
